Ocna Dej Salt Mine Dej

Ocna Dej salt mine is 60 km away from Cluj- Napoca and 3 km from the city of Dej, being exploited from antiquity to the present, for which tourist access is not allowed. The first mentions of salt exploitation at Ocna Dej dates back to Roman times, mining that was done until the 12th -13th centuries, when it is considered that begins the mining in the current area of Ocna Dej Salt Mine.

The mine at Ocna Dej was modernized for the first time in 1882, the year in which the railway Cluj-Apahida-Dej is inaugurated, this being extended to Ocna Dej. Another moment of great significance for the mine was in 1910 that marked the introduction of electrification in the Ferdinand Mine, which led to the development of the mining.

At the end of 2000, at a depth of approximately 80 meters, in Transylvania Mine, it was built a church that was consecrated in the day of St. Varvara, patron saint of the miners. The church is used by the miners, but at the liturgy from the holidays it is open to the public.
