Horea, Closca And Crisan Statuary Group Cluj-Napoca

In the winter of 1784, in the time of the Emperor Josef II and of the governor Samuel von Brukenthal, an uprising of peasants started in Transylvania as manifestation against the constraints to which they were subjected. The uprising was lead by the peasants Ursu Nicola alias Horea, Ion Oarga alias Crisan and Marcu Gurgiu alias Closca. The uprising was defeated and the three leaders were arrested and sentenced to death. Horea and Closca were executed by breaking wheel while Crisan hung himself in prison. In their memory, near “Simion Barnutiu” Central Park, a statuary group which represents them was placed in 1974. The monument was made by Ion Vlasiu.
