Baiulescu House

On the spot where Baiulescu House (Casa Baiulescu) stands today the Strap Makers Bastion was built in the 15th century. It was flanked from behind the city walls by the Strap Makers Bastion and from Vamii Street (nowadays Muresenilor St.) by the Furriers Tower. In 1887 the Strap Makers Bastion was sold and demolished. Manole Diamandi built a villa on the very same spot, which he offered as a wedding present to his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Gheorghe Baiulescu, the first Romanian mayor of Brasov.

Several cultural centres currently function in this building:

George Baritiu Multicultural Centre, which develops cultural programs and promotes the intercultural dialogue;
The English Library;
The French Cultural Centre.
