Presentation - Matthias Corvinus House Cluj-Napoca
Matthias Corvinus House, situated on 6 Matthias Corvinus Street, is the only real estate from the 15th century which is found in its initial form. It is a Gothic building built by merging three houses, the ogival gate being the decisive architectonic element that classifies it in this style.
According to the tradition, Matthias, the King of Hungary, the youngest son of John Hunyadi, was born in this house. The King Matthias Corvinus issued a decree through which this house was exempted from paying the taxes to the state, decree which was complied with by all subsequent Hungarian kings. In the 18th century the house entered in the city patrimony, being used as prison or military hospital.
After the visit in Cluj, the Emperor-King Francisc I makes a donation with which the memorial plaque is made, which reminds the fact that in this location was born the King Matthias the Just. Starting with the 20th century, it enters in the patrimony of the Carpathian Transylvanian Society – one of the first associations which had as object of activity tourism, balneology and ethnography. After the Second World War, the house became a college for students, the building returning later to the University of Art and Design from Cluj. In 1996 the memorial plaque dedicated to the King Matthias Corvinus was mounted in Romanian and English languages.
