Presentation - Bogát Chapel Racu
Bogát between the streams Vár and Szilas is a peak of the Hargita, offering an autonomous, very favourable location even for a more significant fortification, even from today’s strategic points of view. Our ancestor also have noticed this favourable location, that is why this place, nowadays deserted, previously had been dwelled and fortified, dwelled, as at the large peak contains a great amount of brick and tiles, and fortified, because the last peak to north-east to the Olt of these mountains was surrounded by a huge ditch in a semicircular shape, observable for 500 steps. The actual castle was situated inside this exterior defence line, at that place, where today the chapel lies. The castle, which today has only its foundation, it had a circumference of 220 steps. Parallel with this interior wall, but a bit downwards, in the mountainside we can observe a double incision or terrassement, ending only in the eastern side, where the mountain ends abruptly. The exterior ramparts were formed here to prevent access to the fortification. The chapel has been built in the Bogát Mountain, consacrated to Ss. Philip and Jacob. |
