Haller Castle From Coplean Caseiu

Haller Castle is located in Coplean locality, near Dej municipality, being known as the “Castle with seashells” due to architectonic motives sculpted in stone from the window frames.

It was built by John Haller, the governor of Transylvania between 1734 and 1755. The stone used to build the castle is supposed to come from the former Roman camp from Samum.

The castle was built in the middle of a rectangular property, with precinct wall and a tower at the property entrance. In front of the main palace entrance was a terrace supported by six columns which had as decorations Ionic columns in the upper part. Rococo decorations have been added subsequently, made by the Viennese sculptor Anton Schuchbauer (1719-1789). The baroque roof was destroyed in a fire in 1920 and after 1948 the castle was nationalized and transformed in head office for the Cooperative Farms and workshops. The castle is a private property but it can be visited, not being enclosed.
